First-Time Parent Essentials: The Only Baby Care Checklist You Need

Less Is More With Newborns

Walk into a FirstCry store and you will be overwhelmed by thousands of products marketed as "essential." The truth? Newborns need surprisingly little. Here is an honest, no-fluff checklist from experienced Indian parents.

Feeding Essentials

• Nursing pillow (Rs 600-1,000): The My Brest Friend or a simple C-shaped pillow reduces arm and back strain during feeds
• Breast pump (Rs 1,500-4,000): Medela Harmony (manual, Rs 1,800) or Spectra S2 (electric, Rs 3,500). Only buy if you plan to pump — many mothers do not need one
• Bottles (Rs 300-600 for 2): Philips Avent Natural or Pigeon Peristaltic. Buy only 2 initially — some babies refuse bottles entirely
• Burp cloths (Rs 200 for a pack): Muslin cloths work perfectly. Buy 6-8 — you will use them constantly

Sleeping Essentials

• Firm mattress (Rs 800-1,500): Babies should sleep on a firm, flat surface. No pillows, no soft bedding — this is a safety requirement, not a preference
• Muslin swaddles (Rs 400-600 for 2): Aden + Anais or Mulmul brand. Light cotton for Indian climate
• Mosquito net (Rs 300-500): Essential in India. Get a pop-up style that covers the entire sleeping area

Bathing & Skincare

• Baby wash (Rs 200-400): Mamaearth, Cetaphil Baby, or Himalaya — all gentle and affordable
• Coconut oil (Rs 100-200): Cold-pressed virgin coconut oil is the best moisturiser for Indian babies. Skip expensive baby lotions
• Baby tub (Rs 400-700): A simple plastic tub works. Skip the expensive bath seats — you will stop using them in 3 months

Diapering

• Diapers: Pampers Premium Care for newborns (soft, less rash). Switch to Huggies Wonder Pants or MamyPoko once the baby is 3+ months. Budget option: Superbottoms cloth diapers (Rs 500 each, reusable) save Rs 30,000-50,000 over two years
• Rash cream (Rs 150-300): Desitin or Sudocrem. Apply at every diaper change as prevention
• Changing mat (Rs 200-400): Waterproof, wipeable. Keep one in every room where you change diapers

What You Do NOT Need (Yet)

Shoes (babies do not walk), a walker (paediatricians advise against them), an expensive stroller (a simple pram works), fancy toys (newborns cannot see beyond 30cm), and a baby monitor (your Indian home is likely small enough that you will hear everything).

Start minimal. Add items as genuine needs arise. Your baby needs your presence far more than any product.
